Outdoor LED in Florida: What Heat, Humidity & Hurricanes Teach You About Durability

A spec sheet that looks fine in a cool distribution warehouse can fail fast on a Central Florida rooftop in August. Here's what actually matters down here.

Every summer I get at least one call from a property that installed an outdoor display through a national vendor a couple years back, and it's already failing โ€” dead pixel blocks, moisture behind the glass, a control box that cooked itself in a rooftop enclosure. Almost every time, the equipment wasn't bad. It just wasn't specified for Florida.

Outdoor LED that thrives in Phoenix or Denver can genuinely struggle here, because our climate stacks three separate stress factors that most manufacturers' standard spec sheets treat as edge cases: sustained heat, near-constant humidity, and an annual hurricane season that puts wind load and water intrusion on the table every year, not hypothetically.

IP Ratings: The Number That Actually Matters

Every outdoor LED display should carry an IP (Ingress Protection) rating, and it's worth actually understanding rather than glossing over. The rating is two digits: the first covers solid particle intrusion (dust), the second covers water. For true outdoor installs in Florida, we look for a minimum of IP65 on the front of the cabinet โ€” fully dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction โ€” and IP65 or better on the rear as well if the display isn't fully enclosed in a weatherproof structure. Anything rated for "semi-outdoor" or with a lower rear rating might be fine under an overhang in a drier climate; here, wind-driven rain during a summer storm finds its way into gaps a lower-rated cabinet wasn't built to handle.

Humidity and Corrosion: The Slow Killer

Heat gets the headlines, but humidity and salt air (for coastal and near-coastal properties) do the quiet damage. Circuit boards, connectors, and power supplies corrode faster in sustained high-humidity environments, especially when a display sits through months of 80%+ relative humidity without much of a dry season to offset it. The displays that hold up long-term in Florida use conformal-coated PCBs (a protective coating over the circuit board itself), corrosion-resistant connectors, and sealed cabinet gaskets rated for continuous exposure โ€” not just tested in a lab for a rating and left otherwise standard. This is one of the areas where the gap between a "rated for outdoor" product and one genuinely engineered for our climate shows up two or three years in, not on install day.

Wind Load and Structural Reality

Florida building code doesn't treat exterior-mounted equipment casually, and neither should your integrator. Any outdoor LED structure needs to be engineered for the wind load requirements of its zone โ€” and depending on the county and the structure's height/exposure category, that can mean design wind speeds well over 150 mph for coastal and high-velocity hurricane zones. That's not a display spec, it's a structural engineering problem: mounting brackets, the wall or frame it's attached to, and the fasteners all need to be rated for that load, with a licensed engineer signing off before permitting in most municipalities. Skipping this step, or hiring a vendor unfamiliar with Florida's wind load requirements, is how displays end up as expensive projectiles during storm season.

Heat Management Nobody Thinks About Until It's a Problem

LED cabinets generate their own heat, and Florida ambient temperatures give that heat nowhere easy to go. A display baking in direct sun on a south-facing wall in July can see internal cabinet temperatures climb well past what the electronics were rated to handle continuously, shortening the lifespan of drivers and power supplies. Proper installs account for this with adequate airflow clearance behind the cabinet, sometimes active cooling or ventilation in the mounting structure, and brightness/thermal derating built into the display's operating profile so it's not running at max output in the worst afternoon heat unless it actually needs to be for visibility.

Why Local Install Experience Actually Matters

A national vendor selling into Florida from an office in another region can spec a great display and still get the install wrong, because the failure points here aren't in the panel's datasheet โ€” they're in the permitting process, the wind load engineering, the mounting details, and the follow-up maintenance schedule that accounts for our climate. Local experience means knowing which details actually matter here before the first storm tests them.
